Welcome to September and a Busy Season for Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs

Published September 01, 2015 17:08

Wow how quickly the summer has flown by. We are now preparing for Fall of 2015.

We have some exciting things happening at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the Valley.

September will mark the opening of 3 new After School Care Programs including Peter Greer in Lake Country, Carmi in Penticton and one in Okanagan Falls. This will give us the capacity to provide services to more that 60 more kids each day.

Thanks to the support of RBC we will be offering some great new Youth Programs at Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs - Lake Country. Our Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs - Webber Rd Community Centre is also busy planning some great programs and activities for the Youth in West Kelowna.

All our Clubs are busy winding down Summer programs and working on planning great activities and programs for the children, youth and families in all of our communities. Each Club will be providing young people with new opportunities to experience activities and programs that help them learn and grow, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. We will be offering leadership and life skill programs, education support through Rogers Raising the Grade, physical activity and health programs through Canadian Tire JumpStart and much more. Check out the Facebook Page of the Club nearest you. Click here.

On October 4, 2015 Kelowna Motor Werke is working with their customers and Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs to offer a Spirited Drive of a lifetime for our kids ages 10-14 years of age. The young people will get an opportunity to go for a drive in a car that is something most people can only dream about. The drivers are giving of their time and their stories to help inspire the kids in our programs to dream big and believe. Watch for more details in the coming weeks.

There are a some new and returning fundraising events taking place in the next few months. Many of which are due to new partnerships we are forming throughout the Okanagan.

  • Giving Day is September 17th and will give shoppers at Hudson's Bay and Home Outfitters discounts on that day if they purchase a ticket for $5 either prior to the day or at the local stores on the day. All the proceeds of the tickets sold will support Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the valley.
  • Kelowna Chiefs Junior Hockey Home Opener is September 18th.  The Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs - Rutland will be running activities and contests throughout the game. Get your tickets and help us fill the arena. Click here. This is a fundraiser for the Rutland Club.
  • Fall Raffle will begin September 21st to October 31. We are offering 3 great prizes including a WestJet Voucher for 2, a stay at the private Guesthouse at Tinhorn Creek Winery and a Danby Beverage Centre from Coast Wholesale Appliances. Stay tuned for where and when you can purchase your ticket for just $5.
  • Invasion Championship Wrestling in Vernon on October 24th. On this fun-filled night they will invade the Vernon Recreation Centre and show why Invasion Championship Wrestling exhibits the premier Pro Wrestling in BC! Proceeds from the shows will be donated to Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs - Vernon
  • Online Auction to begin in mid to late November. This is a great way to Christmas Shop and help support the youth in our community who are at risk. Proceeds will help ensure that youth have shelter and their basics needs met as well as to support them in growing and learning what they need to be successful and striving.

In August we said farewell to a long term North Area Director, Jack Whelpley who has decided to retire. He will be missed although he has promised to stay in touch. In his place we are happy to have our newest Area Director Kirstie Blanleil take over. She has been working along side Jack for quite some time and is very familiar with the work ahead of her. We are also excited to have a new Human Resources Coordinator join us. Bria Young will begin working with us on September 8th. There are a variety of opportunities for employment with the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs so if you know anyone who is energetic, enthusiastic, wants to make a difference for children, youth and their families and likes to have fun.....point them in our direction. The Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs offer a great work environment, an opportunity to learn and grow and explore what you are passionate about. Join our dynamic team.
