The Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada’s National Youth Forum, “Get Loud,” took place from May 10-14 at the University of Ottawa. The Forum included key note speakers, workshops, and performances. The Forum even made it on Maclean’s. Club Members from the Okanagan attended the forum and have reflected on their experience in Canada’s capital.
One of these youth is Morgan, who attended the Peachland Club and started volunteering with the Club two years ago. Morgan saw the Forum as an opportunity to meet new people and to learn more about helping children and the community.
Morgan’s expectations were met and exceeded. “We did many workshops where we learned about residential schools and leadership in and outside of Boys and Girls Clubs,” said Morgan. “I learned how to step out of my comfort zone and I met some amazing people.”
Canada’s capital city was a perfect location for the Forum in Morgan’s opinion. “The historic sites and scenery were amazing. I want to try and learn more of our country’s history after this trip.” The trip included a visit to the Canadian Parliament and the Ottawa Art Gallery.
Morgan hopes that more youth will participate in the Forum in years to come. “Yes, I would recommend the Forum to others. I would say you will probably want to stay longer and stay in touch with the people you meet for the rest of your life. It’s also a great learning experience.”
