Kiwanis Investing in Kids and Improving Our Community

JfkKiwanis is dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time and their partnership with Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs is an outstanding example of that.

Through the support of the Kiwanis Club of Kelowna (Summit) the Youth Engagement program was a great success this year exceeding target in youth participation and program delivery and giving our youth an opportunity to experience more than ever before.

Staff empowered youth to take an active role in program planning which resulted in some amazing experiences. Some examples of these included Homework help, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) projects, resume writing, interview skills, cooking lessons, community volunteer work, mental health education, and social and emotional learning. Throughout the year, the staff focused on building relationships, created a youth friendly space and delivery activities that meet the social, emotion, recreation, and academic need of the youth.

As youth had a positive experience in the program, the word spread amongst their peer and youth in the Rutland area. At the end of the June 2018, 51 youth between the ages of 10-17 years attended the youth engagement program. Of the 51 kids, 14 were youth who were previous member and the remaining 37 were new to the Club.
The funding through Kiwanis was used to implementation of the Youth Engagement program and we are so grateful for their belief in and commitment to Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs.
