81 kids and youth were able to learn baseball this summer thanks to the Jays Care Foundation’s Rookie League program. Our Martin Avenue and Rutland clubs trained staff to teach and involve young people in baseball.
Once a week this summer, kids would go outside to learn the fundamental skills of baseball. Sessions started off with drills and warm-ups so kids could develop the coordination and skills for the game. Next, kids played a mock game to put their skills into practice. As the weeks progressed, kids learned about teamwork and positive sportsmanship.
Rookie League culminated in a Blue Jays Day event with all of the Kelowna Clubs. Kids were able to refresh their fundamentals at a variety of stations and enjoy one final game in Jays Foundation clothing. They cheered their friends on in between mouthfuls of popcorn and barbeque lunch.
Our staff and Centre Directors at the Martin Avenue and Rutland Clubs were thrilled with the program’s results. One staff even remarked that future versions of the program could be longer because kids loved it so much. Now, our Centre Directors are looking into incorporating the Rookie League into more clubs.
Thank you for introducing us to this amazing program, Jays Care Foundation!
