On a sunny day in June 2017, the Okanagan Boys & Girls Club Downtown Youth Centre was visited by the Coast Capital Help Heroes, a group of brightly-costumed superheroes that were sent on a mission by Coast Capital Savings to provide a helping hand to the Kelowna community through small acts of kindness to Okanagan locals.

Since opening the Kelowna branch, Coast Capital has spent some time learning more about the tremendous community spirit in Kelowna and in particular, the way this community comes together to support young people to achieve their potential. One program that they found to be doing an amazing job supporting youth through their counselling services, recreation programs, employment services and shelter and housing programs is the Okanagan Boys & Girls Club.

In January 2017, as part of the grand opening celebration for the Kelowna branch, Coast Capital contributed $15,000 to the Okanagan Boys & Girls Club youth nutrition program.

More recently in June 2017, the Coast Capital Help Heroes made the Okanagan Boys & Girls Club Downtown Youth Centre their final stop of the day as they ran around Kelowna performing good deeds. In addition to making granola for the kids’ afternoon snack and playing a few rounds of pool and ping pong, the Help Heroes delivered 150 backpacks filled with hygiene products that these kids really need most.

“Whether we are rolling up our sleeves to assist local community organizations or engaging our members in actions to improve their financial well-being, we’re all about help,” says Bonnie Kilistoff, Manager Member Services, Coast Capital Savings Kelowna Branch. “Coast Capital’s “how can we help you?” philosophy extends to everything that we do, and we want the community to know that we are a great alternative when it comes to financial institutions in Kelowna.”

Coast Capital joined the community of Kelowna in November 2016 with the opening of their first Okanagan branch at 1544 Harvey Avenue. As Canada’s largest credit union by membership and an Imagine Canada Caring Company, the credit union annually invests seven per cent of pre-tax profits ($5.6 million in 2016) into the local communities that it serves, with a focus on initiatives that work to empower and engage youth.
