Youth from Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs are being inspired to pursue a post secondary education, thanks to a generous scholarship from Best Buy Canada.

On Sunday November 26, 2017, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs youth was awarded a Best Buy Canada Grade 10 Scholarship at a special presentation in front of friends, family, and supporters at the Kelowna Best Buy.

The deserving recipient, Kristen Anderson received the first part of the three-stage incremental scholarship at the in-store presentation—a $750 Best Buy Canada gift certificate to purchase a laptop to help with homework and high school assignments.

Kristen began her Boys & Girls Club involvement as a young member attending the afterschool program. After years of commitment and attendance, she wanted to grow into a leadership role so she began volunteering with events such as the Moonlight Movies and the Afterschool program. Her positive attitude, go getter attitude is very prevalent. Kristen remembers her time with the Boys & Girls Clubs. She admired the staff whom she got to know and learn from, and she had fond memories of outtrips to beaches, parks, hikes and on tours around the city. Those experiences are what Kristen has brought our team of leaders and to our members when she volunteers each week. She is a local, hometown kid with a big heart and even bigger dreams. The scholarship recipients will also be given $250 when they are in Grade 12 to help cover the costs of post-secondary application fees, and $4,000 will be paid directly to the post-secondary institution that the student attends after high school. The scholarships are designed to help high school students start thinking about their future education and careers, and to ensure that postsecondary education is an achievable, realistic option.

The Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs recipient is 1 of 22 Boys and Girls Club youth from across Canada to be awarded a Best Buy Canada Grade 10 Scholarship in 2017. Recipients are selected based on outstanding contributions to their Club and community, a good academic standing, and financial need. Best Buy Canada has been supporting the Grade 10 scholarship program of Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada since 2001, investing over $2.3 million to help more than 700 young people achieve their dreams of higher education.

“It is through the support of businesses like Best Buy that youth are given the opportunity to continue their successful path towards a ‘Great Future’. We truly value our partnership with Best Buy and appreciate their commitment to our youth.” Richelle Leckey, Community Engagement Coordinator Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs.
