United Steel Workers Local 1-423 have renovated the backyard of the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs Armstrong Food Bank. After visiting the Club in December, the group created a plan for a functional, welcoming backyard and storage space. The new backyard includes a shed, herb/vegetable gardens, and picnic tables.
Beth of the Armstrong Food Bank is grateful for the renovation. “Our building was overcrowded with storage, but the backyard was too overgrown for us to do anything in it. This renovation solved our space issue and will allow us to grow fresh herbs and veggies for our clients.” Beth has already given away 30 heads of lettuce from the garden.
United Steel Workers helped the Armstrong Food Bank because of their commitment to the community. “We like to support the community whenever we can,” said Joanne Sheridan, a USW Executive Board member and employee of Tolko Industries Armstrong Plywood operation. “It’s important to give back to those in need so everyone can flourish.”
“What started out as a donation and fund raising BBQ for the food bank, turned into a project that we are proud to be a part of," added Pat McGregor, President of USW Local 1-423. “A big thank you goes out to Tolko Industries for supplying the materials for the planter boxes and to the volunteers from the plywood plant that gave up their spare time to help.”
We want to thank Joanne and the United Steel Workers team for supporting our Food Bank and the community. There are many life circumstances that lead people to food banks and a good meal increases the likelihood of people recovering and overcoming obstacles.
